been sent out earlier. Before the community board’s recommendation, the city council delivered leaflets to properties on surrounding streets about the proposed lease. It offered residents the opportunity to submit feedback. But residents say the map on the leaflet caused confusion over where the site would be because it wasn’t clear enough. Coastal-Burwood Ward councillor David East agreed there were “some anomalies” with the map which may have been interpreted in different ways. He suggested at an onsite meeting there needed to be a more widespread leaflet drop to clear up confusion and give more residents an opportunity to submit their feedback. •Turn to page 7

By Sophie Cornish RESIDENTS LIVING near QE II Park are unhappy with the public consultation over the approved new lease for the Christchurch School of Gymnastics. Thirteen people signed a letter sent to the Coastal-Burwood Community Board saying residents’ views were not given due consideration. The community board made a recommendation to the city council to approve the proposed lease for the new site on the Ascot Ave side of QE II Park on September 18. The city council granted the lease on September 28. A comment from the community board in a report to the city council acknowledged that a leaflet informing residents of the final decision of where the school would be rebuilt should have

Inside

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK IT WAS a great night at the Pleasant Point Yacht Club on Saturday as fundraising continues to build new clubrooms (see page 3). And it was a special moment for 97-year-old Bob Scott, who has been a member at the club since 1936. Bob met some of the winning Team New Zealand crew who turned up for the fundraiser and I’m sure that most have been a terrific moment. The club has done a fantastic job getting Team NZ on board so congratulations for all those behind it. Between $20-25,000 was raised (final total still to be counted). Residents near the eastern side of QE II aren’t overly happy about the relocation of the school of gymnastics and are angry over the way they have been consulted (see page 1). – Barry Clarke

Team NZ boosts rebuild fund By Sophie Cornish ABOUT $25,000 was raised for the rebuild of Pleasant Point Yacht Club on Saturday night. The event called An Evening with Emirates Team New Zealand ran smoothly, said Pleasant Point Yacht Club spokesman Nigel Humphreys. The club rebuild is planned for South New Brighton Park. Life member of the club, Bob Scott, 97, was given to a lot of attention by Team New Zealand member Joe Sullivan. The formerly “very competitive” yachtie joined the club in 1936 and is the oldest living member. He was club commodore in the 1950s and club captain for many years. Mr Scott’s daughter, Carol Scott, said they had a fantastic evening and her father particularly enjoyed the team’s presentation which included footage on the water. Ms Scott said Mr Sullivan made a fuss of her father. The two men have mutual friends including New Zealand sailor and broadcaster Peter Lester’s father, who Mr Scott went to school with. Mr Sullivan organised members of the Team New Zealand

Proceeds from the auction totalled more than $17,000. The vintage 1995 Team New Zealand shirt is still up for auction on Galabid until the end of the month. A wide range of people attending the event including die-hard yacties, members of the public and a lot of families, said Mr Humphreys. Team New Zealand members took the opportunity to get to know those who attended, coming down on to the floor and mingling with guests and getting photos with them and the cup. Team members who attended include Joseph Sullivan, Richard Meacham, Sean Regan, Chris Salthouse, Nick Hutchins, Hamish Hooper, Harry Lynsky, Norman Newton (cup security) and Aaron Young (Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron).

In Brief SPEAKER THIEF TAKES DIVE A horn speaker was stolen from outside the Rawhiti School office during the school holidays. CCTV footage caught the masked offenders attempting to pull down the speaker before one thief fell face first onto the concrete. The four alleged offenders eventually detached the speaker and ran off. The incident was the second to occur in a month with St Albans School having 20 outdoor speakers stolen. Veterinary practice

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A VET NURSE AT McMASTER & HEAP Its early morning and the HOSPITAL nurse is already hard at work, caring for her sometimes numerous & varied hospital patients who have stayed the night. She cuddles & chats away to them reassuringly as if they were her own! Some soiled patients are sponge bathed, while other patients are syringe fed. She checks, untwists and flushes IV catheters, administers morning medications, fresh food & clean bedding is lovingly placed! All observations are recorded ready for the “Vet rounds”, just as in a hospital! The Vets at McMaster & Heap rely heavily on the expertise and thoroughness of our nurses to inform us with regards to the patients in her care. The vets check over their patients, authorize blood tests or radiographs, change medication or nutrition plans and update the owners. Then its back to the hospital nurse to care for the needs of these patients over the course of the day, updating the vet, speaking to the family members involved and organizing visiting times. Excellent time management skills are required to triage the sick arrivals through the day and care for the already sick and injured. Note taking and recording of medications given is of utmost importance. Meanwhile the doors have opened & the RECEPTION nurse is cheerfully assisting the receptionist, greeting a continuous stream of pets and their owners arriving for today’s appointments & procedures!

She expertly multi tasks while answering the relentlessly ringing phones-today she will take a huge number of calls with a wide variety of questions. She must use her problem solving skills to know when it is OK for a patient to come in later in the day, or if in fact it may require a much more urgent consult time. The SURGICAL nurse gets ready for her busy day ahead. Patients start arriving at 8am for admittance and some days we have 4 vets operating and a list of over 15 surgical procedures to work through. Every nurse has a vet assigned to them to allow continuity of care. She will talk kindly & soothingly to each patient while efficiently placing IV catheters & obtain blood and urine samples to run diagnostic tests for the vet. She then calculates and administers her patients pre anaesthetic medications as instructed. Anaesthetic machines must then be checked & the surgical room fully equipped for the variety of today’s procedures! Once everything is ready, she will assist the vet in the patients induction and intubation, before swiftly attaching all monitoring equipment, as well as manual checks. Once happy the patient is stable, she sterile preps the

patients surgical site. She closely monitors the patient through the entire procedure, alerting the vet to any subtle changes in the patients anaesthetic depth, blood pressure and more. She carefully moves the patient over to a cosy recovery bed, where the hospital nurse is waiting to continue the post operative care. Evening consults are arriving & reception is a hype of activity. Phones are ringing constantly & owners are arriving to pick up their animals from surgery & hospital. The reception nurse expertly talks to owners experiencing a wide range of emotions, from extreme sadness, stress, anxiety, to those who are excited or just plain relieved to be able to see their furry friend once more. She goes over the large variety of discharge information that the vets & nurses have carefully put aside for their patients. The hospital nurse kindly talks to worried owners who are visiting their pets and updates them on the vets plan for overnight care. She carries out her final rounds and ensures everyone gets a cuddle goodnight! She assists the vet in preparing any extremely unwell patients that require transfer to the after hours clinic. At 7pm the last consult has finished, and the doors are closed! The nurses may still be buzzing around for another hour or so, depending on today’s work load. Although sometimes they are totally exhausted (& covered in various unidentified stains & smells!) they go home to their own pets with a big smile on their face. They know each day they assist the vets in making a huge difference to animals lives by putting 100% of time, love, care & knowledge to ensure each furry patient and it’s owner has had the best veterinary service and care possible!!

Ron Tuuta – Great idea at least something positive in the zone, no matter what gets suggested for the area there will be lots of keyboard warriors ready to pull it down. Stefan Mortimer – Car yard is not what we need, I live here and that yard should be used to build units to house the struggling and not what city council says is affordable because $380,000 is not affordable. Roxanne Oliver –

if people go along to the groups being supported by the car sales? Titheing for example?

Maybe Brian Tamaki would like to make a donation. Tana Helsham – Sticking people in a poorer area into easy debt to give back to poorer people? The idea is there I guess, just hope it does more good than harm. Lou Skinner – I am curious about the motivation behind a car sales? Many in this area struggle to buy food let alone a car. Are there any expectations

Emma Healey – That building would be perfect for Aldi. Affordable, high-quality groceries, well-paid jobs with career progression and it would bring in customers from all over the city. The sooner Aldi comes to New Zealand the better. Nancy Watkinson – We have an opportunity to develop the site car yard is just one initiative, it will provide some employment, profits back to help young people on the east side. Deb Brennan – Risky and could have been something more beneficial to those in need than a car yard.

POPULAR: New Brighton Museum chairman Tim Baker spins the chocolate wheel which is coming out of retirement after being popular in the 1970s.

Chocolate wheel returns for final spin in museum THE NEW Brighton Museum’s chocolate wheel is coming out of retirement for just one day. The chocolate wheel was a popular activity in the 1970s. It would be spun on the corner of Oram Ave and Seaview Rd on Saturdays. At the time, New Brighton had a monopoly on Saturday trading and a regular team of men from the Pier and Foreshore Society would spin the wheel to fundraise. Prizes included frozen chickens and chocolates. The museum plans to resurrect the wheel for its garage sale on Sunday. In 1977, the funds raised from spinning the wheel were used to upgrade Thomson Park. A flying fox and other playground equipment was purchased, along

with the playground at South Brighton Domain. The chocolate wheel prizes on Sunday will be small and mainly aimed at children, costing 50 cents per spin. •The museum garage sale will take place on Sunday, 11am-2pm, 8 Hardy St.

•From page 1 Residents then queried a number of different sites for the rebuild and the community board asked city council to consider the sites. The city council assessed several different sites. However, it determined there was only one viable option, the site which had been indicated on the original leaflets. It was then determined by city council staff that a further consultation process was not required. A letter and information leaflet summarising the options that were investigated was sent to residents. However, it was later acknowledged by the community board that this went out some time after the meetings with residents and should have been sent earlier. Many residents who were waiting for the second round of consultation did not receive this leaflet and were unaware there would not be more public consultation. Residents were then told if they had any objections to sub-

Four residents made deputations and two noted disappointment about the lack of proper consultation, including misinformation about the process being extended. Resident Keith McKay did not believe there was enough time to allow for due consideration of the deputations. “Directly after our deputations were made, a decision by

the community board to endorse the site chosen was made. We do not believe the residents deputations were given due consideration, due to the length of time it took to make the decision,” said Mr McKay in the latest letter to the community board. Objections to the proposed site include the loss of park space, over-development of QE II Park, loss of trees, cost of ground improvements, suitability of other sites and the visual impact of the building.

Shirley Boys’ recipe book embraces sugar-free diet By Sophie Cornish A CLASS of Shirley Boys’ High students are passionate about combating high sugar intake. The year 13 food studies class has created a low-sugar recipe book called Life is Sweet which goes on sale today. The book aims to educate readers about ways to consume less sugar and the positive health benefits as a result. Food studies teacher Pete Beswick said he almost fell off his seat when the boys approached him about the idea for the book. “At first I was sceptical but also wanted them to be able to achieve this, so we grabbed the bull by the horns. It has increased my stress levels somewhat, but I have been so proud of the guys and what we have achieved together that the stress took a back seat,” he said. The book was created as part of an assessment involving an investigation into a nutritional issue affecting the well-being of New Zealanders. Every recipe was trialled and adjusted over five weeks by the class. A $6000 loan from the PTA was used to create the book, along with advertising sold to

Waitakiri pupils give up holidays to help elderly

HARD AT WORK: The volunteer cleaners used their school holidays to help elderly residents with their windows.

FOUR WAITAKIRI School pupils volunteered to clean windows for elderly residents during their school holidays. Rosa Jugovac, Lauren Sheere, Holly Neale and Ollie McCosh worked with the Te Whare Roimata organisation on its annual Spring Cleaning Day, which coincided with the International Day of Older Persons. Te Whare Roimata co-ordinator Jenny Smith said the day came about following cut backs to home help some years ago. “We were aware that a number of older people in the inner city and eastern neighbourhoods struggled to get things done in

their homes, and so this was a neighbourhood response we could offer them,” said Ms Smith. “It was just lovely to have the children involved and learn about not only being of service but also how we can support older people.” Waitakiri School spokeswoman Kim Hillson said the pupils were very enthusiastic about helping elderly residents.

Cut a thick slice off the top of the apple and set aside. These will be the chapeaux — hats. Using an apple corer or a teaspoon, dig out the flesh from the centre of the apple, leaving a thin edge of apple around the inside and base.

Discarding any core pieces, chop the flesh finely. Mix together the biscuit crumbs, butter and chopped apple to make a soft mix. Divide the mix evenly among the apples, packing it in firmly. Sit the hats back on top. Place the apples on a baking paper-lined tray or in a shallowsided ovenproof dish. Bake for 15-20min or until the apples have softened. Serve with cream or hot custard.

HEALTH & AWARENESS

Physical Sense supports senior well-being Eight yEars ago, the Physical sense gym and Physio in sydenham, created a program to help stroke survivors. Their specialised exercise program is based on the work of the Burwood stroke rehabilitation team. Participants were so happy with the classes and the benefits they experienced that it has now grown to four classes each week. New classes have also been added to be effective for those who have suffered from Osteoporosis, intermittent Claudication, and Diabetes. On top of that they also run four weekly classes for seniors. These weekly rehabilitation and injury prevention classes can lead to continued gym membership at a reduced cost. Participants may also be eligible for a WiNZ subsidy to pay for the continued gym membership. Join one of the classes and increase your strength and mobility or just come in to find out more about what assistance is available for you. it all starts with a free assessment on Monday at 11.30 am where an experienced physiotherapist will assess your situation and advise you on the most appropriate exercise group with the aim to enable you to keep living as independently as possible. Life can get tougher as we get older, and it’s often easy to think that we should

HOME & HEATING

Choosing the right heat pump for your home

Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit, most homes include at least one heat pump, if not a whole heating solution. They can provide cheap, clean heat and are much more convenient than a log burner as you just need to press a button. But how do you decide what is best? Choosing the right sized heat pump is key to ensuring optimum comfort levels. Every situation varies and it is therefore important to get professional advice from heat pump experts. The range varies from wall mounted high walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems, ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted central heating systems allowing you to have a very discreet way of heating your whole home to a constant temperature throughout. Firstly, you must select a heat pump that is suitable for the size of the space you wish to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area taken into consideration but also, insulation, building orientation, windows and ceiling space. There are a wide range of heat pumps available with different heating outputs so it is important to select the correct size for your requirements that will handle the job but not be unnecessarily overpowered. Secondly, the location of your heat pump is also extremely important. The cheapest installation is a back to back where the outdoor unit is positioned directly behind the indoor unit however this is not necessarily always the best option. It is vital that the indoor unit is positioned in a place that will not be

constantly blowing on you. Also important, is the location of the outdoor unit. Most people do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly in their outdoor entertaining area or right outside their bedroom window. Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands have come and gone over the years but there are a number of manufacturers who provide reputable and reliable products. All brands vary in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems and price, so it depends on your application as to which will be most suitable. Major brands such as Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Toshiba and Hitachi are all reliable brands backed up by good technical after sales service. Ensure your heat pump is installed by an accredited installer. This will not only ensure correct installation of your heat pump, but also validate the manufacturers warranty. Other things to consider when choosing a heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi capabilities. Heating is a major investment in your home and it is vital to get the right advice. Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply, installation and servicing of all major brands of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as to which system will suit your application the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no obligation quote and will come to your home to see what is required. Visit our website at www.enviromaster.co.nz.
